Confined Space Smart Monitoring

Real-time gas monitoring O₂ · CO · CO₂ · H₂S · CH₄ — shaft-top LED & alarms, AI facial-recognition access, certificate management, cloud CMP

Double protection for confined-space works: in-shaft sensors continuously measure O₂, CO, CO₂, H₂S, CH₄, temperature/humidity and PM2.5, mirrored on a shaft-top LED readout with sound-and-light alarms, while an AI facial-recognition camera logs each worker's identity and certificate status at the entrance — all managed centrally on a cloud CMP over 4G.

Overview

Confined Space Smart Monitoring

Challenges

  • Monitor the environment — in-shaft gas sensors continuously measure seven atmospheric parameters: oxygen (O₂), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), methane (CH₄), temperature/humidity and PM2.5.
  • Readings show live on the shaft-top LED display so the whole crew can see the conditions at a glance, and the moment a safety threshold is exceeded a warning beacon and audible alarm trigger on site, with the event pushed to the platform for follow-up.
  • Pass/fail values are configurable per project.

Solution Design

- Monitor the people — an AI facial-recognition camera at the confined-space entrance pairs with web and mobile-app enrolment of face photo, department, card number and certificate details.

- Each worker is verified automatically before entry, access records upload in real time, and certified-worker status (such as confined-space certificates) is tracked, with monthly access and alarm statistics by department, position, type or device.

- Cloud Central Management Platform (CMP) — multi-project, multi-site management: a dashboard of operational status with access and alarm statistics; device readings and entry logs with search, filter, print and export; centralised alarms with follow-up work orders; and function/project permissions by user and user group.

- Sensor readings and access records travel over 4G with no site cabling, making the system quick to deploy on civil (bridges, piers), tunnelling, drainage and watermains, and utility works.

Core Benefits

- The solution helps contractors support safety management under the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Confined Spaces) Regulation — entry control, certified-worker records and continuous atmosphere monitoring.

- It is a management aid and does not replace the statutory risk assessment by a competent person, pre-entry gas testing or related safety procedures.

- It can also be planned as the confined-space module of a Smart Site Safety System (SSSS) deployment, supplied, installed and maintained end-to-end by New Forward.

Key features

Seven parameters, live

O₂, CO, CO₂, H₂S, CH₄, temperature/humidity and PM2.5 measured continuously — the key atmospheric risks of confined spaces.

Shaft-top LED + alarms

Live readings on a big shaft-top display; exceedances trigger the beacon and audible alarm instantly, logged on the platform.

AI facial-recognition access

Each entrant is identified automatically at the entrance; identity, department, card number and entry/exit time upload live.

Certificate management

Web and mobile-app enrolment; tracks certified-worker status and validity, such as confined-space certificates.

Cloud CMP management

Multi-project, multi-site management with search, filter, print and export of records, and permissions by user group.

Monthly reports

Access and alarm statistics by department, position, type or device, generated automatically for safety reviews.

FAQ

How is this different from workers' portable gas detectors?
Portable detectors protect the individual; this system monitors fixed points inside the shaft continuously and centralises the readings in the cloud, with the shaft-top LED keeping the whole crew informed and managers viewing live data and history across sites remotely. The two are complementary — this system is not a replacement for personal detection equipment.
Does it replace the statutory risk assessment and pre-entry gas testing?
No. The system is a safety-management aid for continuous monitoring and traceable records; the risk assessment by a competent person, pre-entry gas testing and related safety procedures required under the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Confined Spaces) Regulation must still be carried out.
Does installation require site cabling?
Data uploads in real time over 4G, so no network cabling is needed; power is configured per site conditions. Equipment installs at the shaft top and entrance per site layout, making it quick to bring online for phased or temporary works.
Can it work together with the Smart Site Safety System (SSSS)?
Yes. This solution can serve as the confined-space module of your site safety setup, planned alongside CCTV, access control and other measures; for full people-plant-environment integration it can be deployed with the Smart Site Safety System (SSSS), supplied, installed and maintained end-to-end by New Forward.
Can records be exported for safety reports?
Yes. Device readings and entry logs support search, filter, print and export, and monthly access and alarm statistics by department, position, type or device are generated automatically — convenient for safety records and internal audits.
